Fifteen-year-old boxing sensation Okolo has described her maiden gold medal triumph as “a thing of joy,” revealing that the victory was inspired by the presence of her mother at ringside for the very first time.

The young pugilist, who just concluded her Senior Secondary School Certificate examinations, said the journey to the top podium was far from easy but fuelled by determination and family support.

“It wasn’t easy though, but I just knew I had to win it no matter the case because my mum was here to watch me for the first time as a boxer. I had to make her, my coaches and others proud,” she said emotionally.

The gold medal marks a significant milestone in her budding career, coming two years after she clinched a silver medal at the National Youth Games.

Overwhelmed with excitement, Okolo dedicated the historic achievement to her mother, Mrs. Okolo Benedicta, acknowledging her unwavering support and encouragement.

“This is my first gold medal and I am so excited about it. I am dedicating this medal to my mum,” she added.

Beyond her current success, the teenager already has her sights firmly set on the global stage. She dreams of representing Nigeria at the Junior Olympic Games, a goal she believes is achievable with hard work and continued discipline.

Okolo also drew inspiration from Lagos-based boxer Joy Ojo, whom she follows closely on social media especially TikTok.

“I love watching Joy Ojo on her social media pages. She’s a good boxer,” she said.
