Three children have drowned after a wooden passenger boat conveying traders from Azuzuama capsized at Ikebiri 1 community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State

The Nation gathered that the incident occurred around 1.00 a.m on Wednesday as the boat sailed to Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital.

It was learnt divers in Ikebiri community retrieved the bodies of the children, two males and a female with ages ranging from six, seven and 15.

The bodies have been conveyed to Azuzuama community, a diver who spoke on condition of anonymity said

Former chairman, Maritime Union Workers, Comrade Ipigansi Ogoniba, who confirmed the incident, adding that divers had been dispatched from Yenagoa.

He said the union had not received the report about the casualties and the numbers of passengers on board.

A source said the accident might have been caused by overloading and a pumping machine- used to evacuate water from the hull of the boat- which malfunctioned.

Police Command’s spokesman, Musa Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent, said he was not aware of the accident.
