Nearly two decades after the release of ‘Dem Mama,’ the single that jolted Nigeria’s music landscape, Timaya remains one of the industry’s most distinct and unfiltered voices. Born Inetimi Alfred Odon on August 15, 1980, the Bayelsa State native has built a career defined by resilience, self-determination, and an unwavering commitment to his roots.

Early struggles

Raised in Port Harcourt, Timaya’s formative years were shaped by economic hardship. He has spoken about hawking plantains on the streets to support his family, enduring hunger and physical strain in the process. The experience, he once recounted with humour, left its mark on him both physically and emotionally.

His path to music was neither direct nor easy. After enrolling at the University of Port Harcourt, he eventually dropped out due to poor academic performance. Undeterred, he pursued music, performing at small events for modest pay while searching for a breakthrough.

Voice of a region

Before stepping into the spotlight, Timaya served as a backup singer for Eedris Abdulkareem, an experience that exposed him to the workings of the industry. Yet it was his own storytelling—rooted in the realities of the Niger Delta—that distinguished him.

Released in 2005, “Dem Mama” confronted themes of marginalisation and unrest in the oil-rich region. Its raw tone and political edge resonated widely, positioning him as an artist willing to address issues often left untouched in mainstream music.

Breakthrough album

The momentum from “Dem Mama” led to his debut album, ‘True Story’, in 2007. The 11-track project fused highlife rhythms with dancehall influences, reflecting both his cultural background and evolving sound. Tracks such as “Ogologoma,” “Honey Na Money,” and “Bayelsa” strengthened his profile and affirmed his place within Nigeria’s competitive music scene.

Beyond music

Over the years, Timaya has sustained relevance in an industry marked by rapid change. His catalogue has expanded, his sound has evolved, and his audience has grown across generations. At the same time, he has remained vocal about issues affecting the Niger Delta, reinforcing the regional identity that first defined his artistry.

His interests now extend beyond recording and performance. From fashion ventures to live events and mentorship of emerging talents, Timaya has sought to translate musical success into broader entrepreneurial pursuits.

Enduring presence

In a music culture known for fleeting dominance, Timaya’s longevity underscores a career anchored in authenticity rather than reinvention for its own sake. From the defiant cadence of “Dem Mama” to his continued presence on major stages, he stands as an enduring figure—an artist shaped by adversity and sustained by conviction.
