President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated renowned journalist, author, and civil society activist, Chido Onumah, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, urging him to rededicate himself to national service and the strengthening of democratic values in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President joined friends, associates, and admirers in celebrating Onumah’s enduring contributions to the promotion of democratic ethos, press freedom, and media literacy.
President Tinubu recalled Onumah’s early involvement in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggles during his student years in the 1980s, noting that he later distinguished himself as a journalist with several prominent media organisations, including The Guardian, AM News, PM News, The News, and The Punch.

The President also commended Onumah’s role in mobilising public support for anti-corruption efforts, particularly during his time as head of the Fix Nigeria Initiative, a project of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“As a civil society activist, Dr Onumah contributed significantly to the promotion of Media and Information Literacy, especially among young people. His support for the implementation and promotion of the whistleblowing policy under the last administration is equally praiseworthy,” the President said.
While acknowledging his achievements, Tinubu urged the veteran journalist to sustain his advocacy by deepening initiatives that promote national unity, expand civic space, and consolidate Nigeria’s democratic gains.
The President wished Onumah continued good health and many more years of impactful service to the nation.
