President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Musiliu Smith, on his 80th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, discipline, and professionalism in the Nigerian Police Force.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President joined family, friends, and associates in celebrating the retired police chief for his outstanding contributions to national security and institutional development.

President Tinubu noted that Smith’s distinguished career in the police was marked by honesty, humility, and a steadfast commitment to duty—qualities he said earned him widespread respect within and outside the force.

“Alhaji Smith's service in the various capacities he found himself was hallmarked by honesty, integrity, and strict professionalism,” the President said.

Smith began his career in the Nigerian Police Force in 1972 as an Assistant Superintendent in Enugu and rose through the ranks, serving as an instructor at the Police College in Ikeja and as Divisional Police Officer in Mubi, Adamawa State.

He later attained the peak of his career when he was appointed Inspector General of Police on May 29, 1999.

The President further highlighted Smith’s academic and leadership credentials, recalling that after completing a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies at the University of Ibadan, he was appointed a member of the Provisional Ruling Council in 1998 in recognition of his reputation and high standing.

Describing him as a “thorough-bred cop,” Tinubu said Smith brought respectability, discipline, and dignity to the Nigerian Police Force during his years of service.

The President also acknowledged Smith’s post-retirement contributions, particularly his role as Chairman of the Police Service Commission between 2018 and 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, where he oversaw police appointments, promotions, and discipline.

He commended the former police boss for his continued commitment to the development of Lagos State and his dedication to the propagation of Islam since retiring from active service in 2002.

President Tinubu prayed for continued good health and many more years of meaningful service for the octogenarian, reaffirming the nation’s appreciation for his enduring legacy.
