President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, on his election as Chairperson of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Kyari was unanimously elected on Tuesday to lead the 49th Governing Council of IFAD, which serves as the organisation’s supreme decision-making authority.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the minister’s emergence as a strong vote of confidence in his leadership and the reforms being pursued under his watch in Nigeria’s agriculture and food security value chain.

“The election of the Agriculture and Food Security minister is a confidence vote in his capacity and the reforms he spearheads in Nigeria's agriculture and food security value chain,” Tinubu said.

The President also expressed optimism that the minister would provide purposeful leadership for the global agricultural development body at a time when many countries are grappling with food insecurity.

“I have confidence that Senator Kyari will give IFAD the right leadership and deepen its relevance and impact, especially at a time of global food security crises,” he added.

Tinubu wished the minister a successful and impactful tenure as he assumes leadership of the IFAD Governing Council.
