President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Chief of Naval Operations of the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Musa Katagum, who passed away on February 19, 2026, after a protracted illness.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President condoled with the family of the late senior officer, as well as officers and men of the Nigerian Navy and the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria over the loss.

President Tinubu described Rear Admiral Katagum’s death as a significant blow to the military and the nation, citing his vast experience and invaluable contributions to the Nigerian Navy and the Armed Forces as a whole.

The late officer served in various strategic capacities during his distinguished career, including as Director of Presidential Communication, Command and Control Centre (PC4), and Chief of Intelligence of the Nigerian Navy.

He was appointed Chief of Naval Operations in November last year, a role regarded as central to the Navy’s operational effectiveness.

The President praised the deceased officer for his valour, exceptional leadership, and dedication to duty, noting that he mentored a generation of officers and contributed meaningfully to strengthening Nigeria’s maritime security architecture.

He prayed that Almighty Allah would grant the soul of Rear Admiral Katagum eternal rest and give comfort and fortitude to his family, colleagues, and comrades in the military during this period of mourning.
