...urges monarchs to serve as frontline peacebuilders

...describes Falae as bridge between tradition and modern governance

  • From Bolaji Ogundele, Abuja

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday called on Nigeria’s traditional rulers to play more active roles in addressing insecurity and fostering unity across the country, declaring that royal fathers must go beyond ceremonial duties to become stabilising forces in their communities.

The President made the call in Lagos at the launch of the autobiography of Oba (Dr) Samuel Oluyemisi Olu Falae, where he emphasised the critical role of traditional institutions in promoting peace, cohesion and grassroots stability.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Tinubu said the current security challenges confronting the nation require the active involvement of traditional rulers as frontline agents of peacebuilding.

“Peace and security are not solely the responsibility of government; they are collective duties,” the President said, urging monarchs to promote dialogue, discourage violence and strengthen unity within their domains.

He stressed that traditional rulers, as custodians of culture and closest authorities to the grassroots, must leverage their influence to encourage peaceful coexistence and social harmony.

“Our royal fathers are the closest link between government and the grassroots,” Tinubu stated. “Your palaces must remain centres of peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and moral guidance.”

The event, attended by political leaders, traditional rulers and members of the diplomatic community, was described by the President as more than a ceremonial gathering, but a reflection on leadership, service and enduring national values.

Tinubu paid glowing tribute to Oba Falae, describing him as “a bridge between tradition and modern governance,” whose career reflects a rare blend of technocratic excellence and cultural leadership.

He noted that Falae’s contributions to public service, particularly during his tenure as Minister of Finance and later as Secretary to the Government of the Federation, were marked by fiscal discipline and policy clarity that helped shape Nigeria’s economic framework at critical moments.

The President also acknowledged Falae’s leadership within the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, where he has served as Chairman of the National Executive Committee since 2025.

Highlighting the enduring relevance of traditional institutions, Tinubu said they remain indispensable to governance, especially amid rising security concerns and social fragmentation.

He assured that his administration would continue to strengthen collaboration with traditional rulers, pledging deeper engagement in efforts to enhance security, promote social harmony, and drive grassroots development.

The President further described Falae’s autobiography as both a personal chronicle and a reflection of Nigeria’s journey through trials and resilience, noting that it offers valuable lessons in perseverance, patriotism, and integrity for younger generations.

Tinubu congratulated the monarch on the publication of the book and expressed optimism that his legacy would continue to inspire future leaders.
