President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday charged the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, to restore peace and strengthen security across the country, assuring him of his full backing in confronting Nigeria’s security challenges.

The President gave the directive at the State House, Abuja, during Disu's decoration as acting Inspector-General of Police, following the retirement of Mr. Kayode Egbetokun.

The appointment is pending ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate.

The Police Council is expected to meet next week.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President said, “I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor.”

Describing the appointment as coming at a critical moment in the nation’s security trajectory, the President urged the new police chief to rebuild public confidence in the Force and deepen collaboration with other security agencies.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level, and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” he added.

President Tinubu tasked Disu with advancing the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in the Acting IGP’s discipline, operational experience, and leadership capacity.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” the President said, reaffirming his belief that the country would prevail under committed leadership.

The President also paid tribute to the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony with his spouse.

“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” Tinubu said.

He urged the former police chief to remain available to offer counsel and support to his successor.

“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” the President stated, wishing Egbetokun and his family peace, good health, and success in future endeavours.

President Tinubu further called on all security stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard lives and property during what he described as a critical period for the nation.

Those present at the decoration ceremony included the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Delta State Governor, Mr. Sheriff Oborevwori, retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, senior government officials, and the parents and family members of the Acting IGP.
