•President lauds peaceful polls, democratic resilience, pledges support for incoming govt

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said he looks forward to working closely with the incoming administration of Beninese President-elect Romuald Wadagni.

The Nigerian leader promised to work with Wdagni to deepen bilateral relations, enhance regional security, and promote economic prosperity within the ECOWAS sub-region.

In a congratulatory letter to the Beninese President-elect following his victory in the April 12 presidential poll, President Tinubu said the transition marked a significant chapter in the country’s democratic journey.

“I, therefore, look forward to working closely with your administration to strengthen our bilateral relations further, enhance regional security, and promote economic prosperity within the ECOWAS sub-region and the African Union,” the Nigerian leader said.

Wadagni, who currently serves as Benin’s Minister of Finance, secured an overwhelming majority of votes in the election.

He became the president-elect amid what has been widely described as a peaceful electoral process.

President Tinubu, in the letter he personally signed, extended warm congratulations on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, noting that Wadagni’s victory reflected the confidence the Beninese electorate reposed in him.

“Your victory reflects the trust the Beninese people have placed in your vision and your distinguished record of service as Minister of Finance,” he said.

The President also praised the government and people of Benin for conducting a peaceful poll, describing it as a testament to their resilience and commitment to democratic ideals.

“This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history. I, therefore, commend the people of Benin for their resilience and commitment to the democratic process and to maintaining peace during the election cycle,” he added.

President Tinubu emphasised the longstanding ties between Nigeria and Benin, highlighting shared history, culture, and cooperation as the foundation for stronger future engagement.

“Our two nations share a long history of friendship, cultural ties, and cooperation,” he noted.

The Nigerian leader assured the Beninese president-elect of Nigeria’s continued support, expressing confidence in Wadagni’s ability to steer his country successfully.

“As you prepare to assume the onerous responsibilities of the high office of the Presidency, I wish you great wisdom, fortitude, and success. You can please rest assured of my unstinting support and cooperation,” the President said.
