...says a rare coincidence shows Nigerians are “one people under God.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Christians and Muslims in Nigeria to use the solemn seasons of Lent and Ramadan to promote peace, unity, and stability, as both religious observances begin on the same day this year.

In a message to the faithful on Tuesday, the President described the coincidence as uncommon, saying it serves as a reminder that Nigerians, as people of faith, share much in common and remain “one people under God.”

“With profound reverence to God Almighty, I greet the Christian and Muslim faithful on the solemn occasions of Lent and Ramadan,” Tinubu said.

“This year, Lent and Ramadan begin on the same day. This is not a common occurrence, and it reminds us that as a people of faith, we share a lot in common and are one people under God.”

Tinubu said Lent, for Christians, represents a period of fasting, abstinence, and penitence, rooted in the example of Jesus Christ’s wilderness experience before His crucifixion.

He noted that the season points believers to sacrifice and spiritual discipline, describing it as a period that reflects Christ’s suffering and the salvation it brought to mankind.

During Ramadan, the President said the month is a sacred period in Islam that reflects total submission to God Almighty and His command of sacrifice, devotion, service, and communal love.

He said beyond the obligatory fast, Ramadan calls for deep spiritual reflection and obedience to Islamic injunctions, noting that it is one of the five pillars of Islam.

“As a nation and as a people, I urge us, as we embark on these important observances, to ensure good neighbourliness, promote peace, unity, and stability, and pray for the progress and security of our nation,” the President stated.

He also urged Nigerians to live by the core values of their faiths, stressing the need to remain honourable in duty to God and to fellow human beings.

“Let us live by the good precepts of our faiths and be honourable in our duty to God and fellow humans,” Tinubu added.

The President prayed that the lessons and blessings of the two sacred seasons would endure beyond the fasting period, bringing lasting joy and spiritual renewal to Nigerians.

“I pray that the lessons, blessings, and joys of these sacred seasons abide with us always,” he said.
