Nigeria’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, said President Bola Tinubu is committed to addressing what he described as long-standing grievances fueling insecurity across the country.
Ibrahim conveyed this position while presenting his letter of credence to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, in New York, where he also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to global and regional peace efforts.
He said Nigeria remains focused on strengthening multilateral cooperation to address insecurity and promote stability in strategic regions, including the Sahel and West Africa, and on supporting broader international peace initiatives.
The ambassador also reiterated Nigeria’s call for reform of global governance structures, including a permanent African seat on the UN Security Council, arguing that the current arrangement does not reflect present global realities.

On regional security, he said Nigeria will continue to mobilize support with partners to address rising threats in West Africa and the Sahel while sustaining peacebuilding efforts across the continent.
Ibrahim further highlighted key economic reforms under President Tinubu’s administration, including the removal of fuel subsidies, the unification of the exchange rate, and tighter monetary policies to stabilize the economy and curb inflation.
He said early indicators suggest gradual improvements in debt sustainability and inflation trends, adding that investments in infrastructure and the power sector are being sustained.
In response, Guterres welcomed Ibrahim’s appointment, expressing confidence in stronger cooperation between Nigeria and the United Nations.
He described the engagement as timely and reaffirmed the UN’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria to advance shared global priorities
