The federal government has said that about 10 million Nigerians are expected to benefit from the grassroots-focused development initiative under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The initiative aims to improve living standards and reduce poverty across communities nationwide.
The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, disclosed this after he was appointed Grand Patron of the National Councilors’ Forum of Nigeria by its members.
Bagudu explained that the initiative, known as the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, is designed to drive economic growth at the grassroots by focusing on the 8,809 wards across Nigeria. He said the programme would identify the main economic activities in each ward and provide targeted government support to boost productivity and income.
According to him, “With about 10 million citizens expected to benefit from the initiative, the Bola Tinubu administration’s poverty-reduction objective would receive a significant boost.”
He added that the programme is part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening local governance and ensuring that development reaches communities at the lowest level.
Reacting to his appointment, Bagudu said he was honoured by the recognition and pledged to intensify efforts towards improving economic opportunities at the grassroots.
“I am humbled by this honour, and it will encourage me to work harder to stimulate the grassroots economy for the benefit of the majority of Nigerians,” he said.
The minister also appreciated the forum for its continued support for the President, noting that its endorsement of a second term for Tinubu reflects growing confidence in the administration’s reform agenda and its economic impact.

Earlier, the National Councillors’ Forum of Nigeria said Bagudu’s appointment was in recognition of his contributions to national development and public service.
In a letter dated April 23, 2026, and signed by its President, Abdulrazak Sama’ila, the forum stated that the minister’s experience and commitment made him suitable for the position.
“Your dedication to public service and to the development of our country makes you a perfect fit for this prestigious position,” the letter read.
During a visit to the minister over the weekend, Sama’ila formally presented the appointment letter and said Bagudu would be expected to support the forum’s efforts to promote good governance, transparency, and accountability at the grassroots level.
He added that the councilors look forward to working closely with the minister and benefiting from his experience as they pursue development at the local level.
