In football, being “notorious” can mean many things: a flair for the eccentric, a tendency toward violence, or a habit of scoring goals as well as preventing them.

Here are the goalkeepers whose reputations went far beyond clean sheets.

The madmen and rebels

1. René Higuita (Colombia) – Notorious for: The "Scorpion Kick" and high-stakes risk-taking.

Higuita practically invented the "Sweeper Keeper" role, but with a terrifying sense of danger. He famously cleared a ball against England at Wembley using a Scorpion Kick—diving forward and striking the ball with his heels.

Off the pitch, his notoriety turned darker when he was imprisoned in 1993 for involvement in a kidnapping mediation linked to drug cartels.

2. Harald "Toni" Schumacher (West Germany) – Notorious for: The 1982 World Cup assault on Patrick Battiston.

During the semi-final against France, Schumacher charged off his line and collided violently with Battiston, leaving the Frenchman with three lost teeth, cracked ribs, and a coma. Schumacher’s lack of remorse cemented his villain status in France and across Europe.

3. José Luis Chilavert (Paraguay) – Notorious for: Goal-scoring and a fiery temper.

A free-kick and penalty specialist, Chilavert scored 67 career goals. Offensively talented, he was equally infamous for aggression—once spitting on Roberto Carlos, punching Diego Maradona, and regularly engaging in on-field brawls. He defended his goal and his ego with equal intensity.

4. Bruce Grobbelaar (Zimbabwe/Liverpool) – Notorious for: "Spaghetti Legs" and match-fixing allegations.

Grobbelaar’s wobbly “spaghetti legs” became legendary during the 1984 European Cup final penalty shootout, distracting Roma players. Later in his career, match-fixing allegations clouded his legacy, though he was ultimately cleared. His “bad boy” image, however, endured.

5. Jens Lehmann (Germany) – Notorious for: On-pitch antics and relentless gamesmanship.

A brilliant yet hot-headed keeper, Lehmann once jumped over an advertising board mid-match to relieve himself behind the goal. He was also infamous for stealing opponents’ shoes, throwing water at referees, and using mind games to unnerve strikers.

These goalkeepers weren’t just guardians of the net—they were masters of spectacle, controversy, and fearless innovation.
