Actress Toyin Alausa has expressed concern over the growing prevalence of online harassment and character defamation on social media platforms.

In a recent post on Instagram, she criticised what she described as a pattern of public defamation, where individuals’ reputations are deliberately undermined.

Alausa noted that such actions are often driven by the quest for attention, increased engagement, and sustained public interest, warning against the spread of negativity in the digital space.

Toyin noted that she has witnessed numerous talented individuals fall victim to such malicious conduct, wherein strangers choose to propagate falsehoods and damaging narratives merely because "pain sells" and controversy draws traffic.

She wrote, “I have watched in silence. I have watched people drag names, tear down reputations, and pour poison into the air, all for clout. All for clicks. All for the desperate hunger of relevance.

"And it breaks my heart. It breaks my heart because I have seen it happen to good people. Talented people. People who woke up one morning to find their name in the mouth of strangers who know nothing about them, strangers who chose cruelty over truth simply because pain sells. Because controversy generates traffic. Because in this age of social media, tearing someone apart has become a strategy.

"A strategy. Let that sink in. I have been in this industry long enough to know that your name will be tested. People will try to bait you, provoke you, use you, anything to get a reaction they can monetise. They will say the most ugly, vile, unspeakable things about another human being, not because they know the truth, but because desperation has no conscience".

She urged those being targeted to remain dignified and silent, saying, "Your silence is not weakness."

"To everyone out there being dragged through the mud by people who have nothing but hate and a phone: your silence is not weakness. Your dignity is your power", she added.

The veteran actress also prayed for those engaging in online hate, hoping they'll find something meaningful to hold onto, as "hate is an empty house, and one day, you will have to live in it alone".

"And to those who have made cursing others their content strategy, I pray you find something real to hold onto. Because hate is an empty house, and one day, you will have to live in it alone”.
