Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital economy is creating new opportunities for content creators, with travel and lifestyle storytelling emerging as a growing niche within the country’s online creator ecosystem.

Industry observers say the rise of social media-driven storytelling has enabled young Nigerians to build audiences and influence conversations around tourism, lifestyle and global mobility, while also contributing to the broader online economy through brand partnerships, digital engagement and audience-driven content.

One of the emerging creators in the space is Onomefe Jonathan Fred, a Nigerian lifestyle and travel content creator known on Snapchat as Mrjonathan101, who has built a growing online following by documenting travel experiences and curated lifestyle moments across different destinations.

Digital analysts say the increasing popularity of travel content reflects a wider transformation within Nigeria’s creator economy, where audiences are shifting toward experiential and visually driven storytelling.

Unlike many influencers who focus on comedy skits or social commentary, Fred’s content centres on travel documentation, sharing snapshots of city landscapes, hotels, airports, dining locations and everyday experiences through short-form updates on Snapchat.

Experts say this type of storytelling allows followers to experience destinations virtually, creating stronger emotional engagement between creators and audiences.

“Content around travel and lifestyle is becoming more influential because audiences want experiences they can connect with,” said a Lagos-based digital strategist who tracks trends within Nigeria’s creator industry.

According to analysts, travel creators are increasingly contributing to how global tourism and lifestyle culture are perceived among young Nigerians, while also helping to position African travellers as active participants in international cultural spaces.

Although platforms such as Instagram and TikTok dominate Nigeria’s influencer landscape, Snapchat remains a key platform for creators who focus on real-time storytelling and more personal engagement with audiences.

Analysts say the platform’s diary-style format allows creators to build stronger relationships with followers through continuous content updates rather than occasional posts.

Fred’s content approach reflects this format, functioning largely as a digital travel diary where followers encounter scenes from airports, sunrise landscapes, minimalist interiors and urban explorations shared in real time.

Observers say this form of storytelling highlights how influence within the digital economy is evolving beyond viral trends toward consistent content creation and niche audience communities.

Nigeria’s online creator ecosystem has grown significantly in recent years, producing influencers across sectors such as technology, finance, wellness, entertainment and lifestyle.

Travel creators, in particular, are becoming an important part of this ecosystem as audiences increasingly seek global perspectives and lifestyle inspiration through digital platforms.

As the country’s digital economy continues to expand, analysts expect more creators to explore specialised niches such as travel storytelling, using social media platforms to build communities, attract partnerships and contribute to the evolving landscape of Nigeria’s online influence industry.
