Several suspected members of the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) have been killed and a cache of firearms recovered after troops of Operation HADIN KAI repelled a terror attack on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Magumeri, Borno State, the Army said yesterday.
It said the failed attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when the terrorists attempted to infiltrate the base under poor visibility.

In a statement issued last night, the Media Information Officer, Operation HADIN KAI, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba said troops “fought gallantly and decisively contained and defeated the attack.”
Uba confirmed that two soldiers were unfortunately killed during the encounter, while an officer and other wounded personnel were receiving treatment and are in stable condition.
He said the terrorists made minor breaches in an isolated section of the camp, but were overpowered by troops.

He said further exploitation of the area revealed “extensive blood trails, body drags and the recovery of terrorist corpses,” indicating heavy casualties among the attackers.
"The troops also recovered arms and ammunition abandoned by the fleeing insurgents, including PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, AK-47 rifles and magazines," said Uba.

Some equipment and temporary structures were also damaged by fire during the exchange, the statement added.
Uba said troops were continuing exploitation operations in the area to consolidate gains and assess further battle damage.
He added that the failed attack demonstrated the resolve of Operation HADIN KAI troops to deny terrorists freedom of action across the North-East theatre.
The military high command commended the troops for their performance and urged them to sustain the operational tempo.
