A dispatch rider was killed on Wednesday after a fully loaded diesel tanker rammed into his motorcycle under the Cele Bridge axis of the Apapa Oshodi Expressway in Lagos, with the driver fleeing the scene.

The fatal crash, which occurred along one of the state’s busiest transport corridors, triggered swift intervention by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, who moved quickly to secure the area and prevent further accidents.

Eyewitnesses said the tanker, identified as a HOWO vehicle, struck the motorcycle with force, trapping the rider beneath it and killing him instantly.

LASTMA officials stationed along the corridor immediately cordoned off the crash site with safety cones and caution tape to forestall secondary collisions and ensure the safety of other road users.

The tanker was subsequently impounded, but the driver reportedly absconded after realising the gravity of the incident.

Operatives of the Ijesha Police Division later arrived at the scene to take over the investigation in line with standard procedure. The remains of the deceased, alongside the damaged motorcycle and the impounded tanker, were handed over to the police.

The body was thereafter evacuated to a morgue in Yaba.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare Oki, described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.

He urged the police to carry out a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash and ensure that the fleeing driver was apprehended and brought to justice.
