Two persons have been confirmed dead following a midnight collision involving two fully laden container trucks along the Cele inward axis of the Oshodi Apapa Expressway at Mile 2, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said the crash involved two 40-foot containerised trucks and occurred late at night, resulting in the death of one of the drivers and a suspected miscreant.

According to the statement, the driver of one of the trucks, with registration number T 392 LA, died after being trapped inside the steering compartment due to the severity of the impact. A second victim, described as a suspected miscreant, was found dead beneath one of the trucks, although his presence around the articulated vehicles at the time of the crash could not be immediately established.

LASTMA said its Rescue and Recovery Team carried out a careful and technical operation to extricate the trapped driver, while an extensive search was conducted to recover the second body from beneath the truck.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), whose technical support assisted in the complex recovery process.

Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Ilasa Police Division, were also deployed to the scene to secure the area and preserve evidence.

The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit later evacuated the remains of both victims, paving the way for the gradual restoration of traffic flow along the busy freight corridor.

LASTMA said the incident was subsequently handed over to the Ilasa Police Division for investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as a reminder of the risks associated with high-traffic logistics routes.

He urged operators of articulated vehicles to drive responsibly, observe speed limits, and comply strictly with safety regulations, particularly during night operations.

Oki also called on motorists to remain vigilant and promptly alert emergency agencies whenever hazardous situations are noticed on the roads.
