UNIBEN forbids students from social vice

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. Edoba Bright Omoregie, SAN, has charged the newly admitted students to shun all forms of social vice, noting that the institution forbids whatever will distract their academic pursuits.
He made this known during the 2025/2026 matriculation ceremony conducted in Akin Deko Auditorium, Ugbowo Campus, Benin City, Edo State.
The don noted that the 2025/2026 matriculation was significant as many of the students are pioneers of the 17 newly introduced courses and programmes in the institution, adding that a total of 15,077 students were formally admitted into various faculties, schools, centres and programmes, up from about 10,000 admitted in the 2024/2025 academic session.
He also stated that the institution is committed to raising men and women who will be useful to themselves and society.

The VC, who is also an alumnus of UNIBEN, warned that the university has zero tolerance for cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice and other social vice, stressing that offenders would be expelled.
He encouraged the students to engage positively with lecturers and make good use of academic, sporting and extracurricular facilities within the university.
Speaking with Oboh Destiny, one of the matriculating students from the newly established faculty of communication and media studies, unbundled from the department of Mass Communication situated in Ekehuan campus of the university, he expressed his happiness for being admitted into UNIBEN.
He described the matriculation as the beginning of a new phase in his academic journey. Similarly, a parent of the freshmen, Mrs Obiorah Grace, expressed her joy that her ward had gained admission into UNIBEN, stating that she is the happiest person among the parents of the matriculants.
