A 500-level Doctor of Optometry student at the University of Benin, Pemije Gadimoh, has been honoured with the Eyeball Hero Award: Future Optometrist of the Year 2025.

The award was conferred by the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in recognition of his academic excellence and international impact in leadership and research.

The ceremony, held on March 26 at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, saw the award presented by ODORBN Registrar, Obinna Awiaka, alongside Oteri Okolo of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Gadimoh, who was represented by his mother and sister, has earned national and international recognition for his leadership in student development, global collaboration, and eye health advocacy.

As founder of OPTOGLOBE – The Global Optometry Student Community, he has led initiatives connecting optometry students across more than 50 countries, promoting knowledge exchange, capacity building, and innovation within the profession.

Reacting to the recognition, Gadimoh expressed appreciation to ODORBN and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, describing the award as both humbling and motivating.

“This recognition is not just a personal milestone, but a reflection of the collective efforts of students and organisations working to advance optometry globally. It inspires me to continue contributing meaningfully to eye health and professional development,” he said.

He also acknowledged the support of professional and student bodies, including KnowTheGlow, the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), the Nigerian Optometric Students Association (NOSA), the African Federation of Optometry Students (AFOS), VOSH/INTERNATIONAL, Optometry Giving Sight (OGS), and other global partners.

The Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, continues to play a key role in regulating and advancing optometric practice and eye health delivery in Nigeria.
