The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has taken a major step in integrating education and finance with the launch of its Smart ID Project, a collaborative initiative between non-interest lender LOTUS Bank and technology partner Heckerbella.

Unveiled in a ceremony attended by university leadership, faculty members, students, and senior executives from both LOTUS Bank and Heckerbella, the Smart ID Card is designed as a dual-function solution.

It serves as UNILAG’s official identification credential while also operating as a secure debit card, enabling safe, cashless transactions both on and off campus.

The project aims to streamline administrative processes, enhance operational efficiency across faculties and departments, and promote financial literacy and inclusion among students.

By embedding secure debit functionality, the card allows for seamless identity verification, access control, and digital payments within the university ecosystem.

As a technology and implementation partner, Heckerbella handles comprehensive data capture, secure card production, and issuance, ensuring accuracy, security, and efficiency throughout deployment.

During the launch, Vice Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola formally presented the Smart ID Cards to students and staff, highlighting the institution’s commitment to innovation and strategic partnerships to enhance service delivery.

Speaking at the event, LOTUS Bank Managing Director Dr. Isiaka Ajani-Lawal described the project as a forward-thinking initiative that merges identity management, access control, and financial services on a single platform.

“This collaboration with UNILAG and Heckerbella delivers convenience, strengthens security, and accelerates the transition toward a modern, cashless campus,” he said.

Heckerbella’s Managing Director, Ms. Yemi Keri, emphasized the role of secure identity infrastructure in modern institutions, noting that the project demonstrates how technology, banking, and education can converge to deliver practical, future-focused solutions.
