The Uvwie General Improvement Union (UGIU) has cautioned against “provocative and fallacious claims” by some Itsekiri individuals over the ownership and founding of several communities in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

Addressing a press conference in Effurun on Thursday, UGIU President-General, Chief Hope Erute, said the peaceful disposition of the Uvwie people “must never be mistaken for weakness,” stressing that the kingdom would defend its territory and heritage if necessary.

“The Uvwie kingdom is not afraid, and will never be afraid, to defend its territory, its heritage, and its people,” Erute declared.

He said the union was reacting to narratives allegedly presented at a recent Itsekiri cultural festival, claiming that the Itsekiri founded Ugbenuowhoru (also referred to as Ukpolokposo), Ugbomro, Okwatata and Iteregbi communities in Uvwie.

“It is not in the character of the Uvwie people to respond to delusional folktales from neighbours. Ordinarily, we would have ignored these claims… However, silence in the face of persistent falsehoods can sometimes be mistaken for consent,” he said.
