The Vice Chancellor, University of Jos(UNIJOS), Prof Ishaya Tanko, has said the institution lost two students in the recent violence in Jos.

Two other students and one staff member sustained injuries from the skirmishes, saying the university is not under any threat from its host communities.

Ishaya stated during a press conference at the university yesterday in Jos.

“We have a total of five members of the University of Jos affected. Four students and one staff member. We, unfortunately, lost two of the four students,’’ he explained.

Abel Joro Gershon, a 300 level Building Engineering student, was shot on his stomach. He was rushed to University of Jos Teaching Hospital (JUTH) Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he died last Sunday and was buried three days later.

Also, Ishaya Patrick, a 300 level Geography and Planning student, who was injured on his leg is on admission at JUTH, while Duguryil Ufialas Daniel, a staff member of the Directorate of Student Affairs was shot on his thigh, and is in the hospital receiving medical care.

During the April 1 violence on Bauchi Road, Adeyomo Oluwafemi Temitope, a 500 level Quantity Survey student of the University of Jos, was killed by some hoodlums.

He added that Mr. Longji Molshap Wumnokol, a 300 level Geology student, was injured by some hoodlums on April 1. He was rushed to Ola Hospital, where was stabilised and moved to JUTH for treatment.

He said the university has continued to build understanding with its immediate host communities, with assurances of protection.

“What is required of us to build cordiality, to build understanding with the communities that we share boundaries with.

He said students residing within the immediate communities were protected by the community members.

“We have evidence that communities came and said no students should come out and they were going to protect them.

“I went to visit Anguwan Rogo and other communities, to talk to the leaders and seek more support, I also talked to the youth,” he said.

Ishaya said the viral video showing chaotic situation at the university, was false and an AI generated aimed at misinforming the public.
