The Catholic Church confers knighthood on members in recognition of their commitment to faith, service, and the growth of the church. The Priest-in-Charge of Catholic Church of Presentation (CCP), Abule-Egba, Lagos, Very Rev. Fr. Gasper Olarenwaju, has said.
He explained that the tradition, which dates back over 500 years, underscores the vital role knights play in supporting the church’s mission and strengthening its presence in society.
Speaking during a special service where Mr Benedict Okhumale and his wife, Theodora, were conferred as Knight and Lady Knight of St. John International, Fr. Olarenwaju described the honour as a recognition of dedication and sacrifice.
“They are very important to the church, having contributed to its tremendous growth,” he said. “Without the knights, the Catholic Church would not be what it is today.”
The ceremony drew several dignitaries, including representatives of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos and officials of the Knights of St. John International (KSJI) and Ladies Auxiliary.
Reacting to the honour, Sir Okhumale expressed gratitude, describing the recognition as a call to deeper service and commitment.
“It means a lot to my family and me. It is an opportunity to grow spiritually and to serve both the church and humanity,” he said.

He noted that the knighthood places a responsibility on recipients to lead by example, especially within their families and communities.
Highlighting the guiding principles of the order, he emphasised the importance of the “three Ts” — Talent, Treasure, and Time.
“My talent will be used in organising and supporting charitable activities. My treasure involves contributing to church projects and outreach programmes, while my time will be dedicated to prayer, visiting the sick, and active participation in church life,” he said.
He also encouraged other members of the church to embrace service, noting that the order provides a platform for strengthening faith and contributing meaningfully to society.
The Knights of St. John International and its Ladies Auxiliary, in collaboration with the Archdiocesan Laity Council, are currently promoting the Catholic Faith Family Project, an initiative aimed at deepening faith among families through structured activities and competitions.
The programme will culminate in a grand finale later in the year, with prizes including a car, N1 million, N700,000, and N300,000.
