The death of a woman, 36-year-old Matilda Jideofor, through fake drugs, has brought redemption to Adabebe village, Amawbia, in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The woman’s sudden demise, following alleged patronising of a quack, who gave her fake drugs for malaria, caused wailing and gnashing of teeth among the people.

The incident led to a vow by one of the illustrious indigenes of the community, Chief Michael Odoh, to build a health facility in the area three years ago.

Last weekend, the tale of woes turned into celebration, as the one storey building, named Adabebe Primary Healthcare, was inaugurated by the Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration.

The donor, Chief Odoh, speaking with The Nation, said: “The sudden death of that innocent woman touched me and I vowed to make sure such a thing would never happen in the area again.

“If the woman had gone to a well-equipped hospital or to a pharmacy to buy good drugs, that sudden death wouldn’t have occurred. Patronising quacks is dangerous. That was exactly what motivated me to build the health centre at Adabebe.”

Health Commissioner Dr Afam Obidike said: “This is exactly what Governor Soludo’s administration has been preaching. Private, Public, Partnership arrangement, PPP.”

He said the government had sent some workers and medical equipment to the facility, noting that some of the diseases such as malaria, diabetes, among others are killers.

Hailing the donor for being a man of his words, he advised the residents to make use of the facility, to avoid untimely death.

The primary health care to improve health delivery at Adabebe and its environs has 24-hour power supply.

The facility renders antenatal services to expectant mothers, immunisation services for newly-born babies, circumcision, treatment of minor ailments, counselling and laboratory services.

Sir Vincent Odoh, an uncle to the donor of the facility, said: ‘’He used it also, to epitomise his grandmother, mother (Mgbeke Odoh), among others.

“A woman died out of carelessness. She was ill. She met a quack, who mixed drugs for her without any form of test and after taking those drugs, the woman gave up.

“When the donor came home and heard about such report, he was moved to tears and vowed to build a health facility at Adabebe. This is the reason for this crowd here today.”

The joy of the residents, who gathered to witness the inauguration of the facility by the health commissioner, knew no bounds, as their pains have been reduced by Chief Odoh.
