First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has urged fellow Nigerians to embrace inclusion and uphold the dignity and rights of persons living with autism.
She said their contributions remain vital to society.
In a message yesterday in Abuja to commemorate this year’s World Autism Awareness Day, the First Lady joined the global community in affirming “the dignity, worth, and limitless potential of every person living with autism”.
She noted that this year’s theme: “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value,” underscored the importance of recognising individuals with autism as an integral part of humanity.
Mrs. Tinubu said: “People living with autism are an important part of our shared humanity. Their lives, voices, and contributions enrich our communities and strengthen our collective future.”
The First Lady warned against the persistence of misinformation and harmful narratives surrounding autism, urging Nigerians to remain committed to promoting understanding and inclusion.
“At a time when misinformation and harmful narratives about autism sometimes reemerge, we must remain steadfast in promoting understanding, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all,” she said.
Mrs. Tinubu urged fellow citizens to work collectively towards building a society anchored on respect for human dignity and equal rights.
“Let us all continue to build a society that recognizes the inherent dignity, equal rights, and unconditional value of every individual,” the First Lady added.

The young cyclist was celebrated for completing a long-distance advocacy ride from Enugu to Lagos, using the journey to raise awareness about autism and promote inclusion for persons on the spectrum.
Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu described the feat as a powerful reminder that individuals with autism possess immense potential that must be recognised and nurtured.
“Every child has value. What we have seen today is a demonstration that impossibility is a myth. There are extraordinary abilities in every young person on the autism spectrum, waiting to be discovered and celebrated,” he said.
The governor applauded Kanyeyachukwu’s courage, resilience and discipline, noting that his advocacy had transformed awareness into action and inspired a national conversation on autism.
“We are proud of you. You have shown rare courage, strength and remarkable determination. Your journey has not only broken records but also changed lives and perspectives,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the unwavering support of the cyclist’s family, particularly his mother, whom he described as “the force behind the success.”
He urged Nigerians to see autism not as a limitation but as “a different way of expressing intelligence, creativity and contribution to society.”
As part of efforts to strengthen autism advocacy and support systems, the governor announced a N200 million donation, comprising N100 million for autism-focused organisations, which will be managed through LASODA and another N100 million to the foundation supporting Kanyeyachukwu’s initiative.
He urged well-meaning Nigerians and other stakeholders to contribute towards improving care for persons with special needs, especially through training and development of professional caregivers.
Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, said the initiative, which began in Enugu on March 14, has grown into a movement with strong government backing.
He noted that the state’s involvement reflects its commitment to youth development and social inclusion.
Also, the General Manager of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, reiterated the agency’s mandate to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities.
She said Lagos State has continued to implement policies and programmes aimed at improving the quality of life for people with special needs.
“This achievement is a testament to what is possible when individuals are supported. We must continue to create opportunities that allow persons with disabilities to thrive,” she said.
Kanyeyachukwu’s father, Tagbo-Okeke, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government and other supporters for ensuring a successful and incident-free journey.
He described the endurance ride as physically demanding but deeply fulfilling, noting that the support received across states played a crucial role in its success.
Also, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has called for greater awareness and inclusion for individuals on the autism spectrum.
In a statement yesterday, Obi described autism not as a limitation but as a different way of experiencing the world, urging Nigerians to embrace inclusivity and support for affected individuals and their families.
He announced his participation in the upcoming seven-kilometre Autism Awareness Walk scheduled for tomorrow at Monolisa Park in Abuja. The event is organised by the Ria By Maria Autism Foundation.
Obi said: “Promoting autism awareness, ensuring early diagnosis, and creating inclusive support systems are essential for building a compassionate and productive society.”
The former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election said the organisers for their advocacy efforts and encouraged residents of Abuja and beyond to participate in the walk and support the cause.
He noted that a better nation can only be achieved when no one is left behind, reiterating the need for policies and actions that promote inclusion and equal opportunity for all citizens.
