As Kaduna State joined the global community to commemorate the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, Governor Uba Sani reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding press freedom and protecting journalists in the state.
In a statement issued through the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, the state governor underscored the critical importance of a free, responsible, and independent media in advancing peace, human rights, and sustainable development.
Maiyaki said the media remains a cornerstone of democratic governance in Nigeria and Kaduna State, noting that journalists play a vital role in informing citizens, shaping public discourse, and strengthening accountability in public institutions.
He stressed that Governor Uba Sani’s administration has continued to uphold the constitutional guarantee of press freedom by fostering an enabling environment for journalists to operate without undue interference.
According to the commissioner, the governor’s stance reflects a firm belief that a credible and responsible media is indispensable to peace, good governance, and democratic stability, as well as an informed and engaged society.
Maiyaki, however, raised concerns over the growing threats posed by misinformation and disinformation, warning that they undermine public trust, social cohesion, and national security.
He noted that in the face of these challenges, ethical, accurate, and professional journalism has become more critical than ever, insisting that such standards must remain non-negotiable within the media space.
The commissioner assured that Kaduna State would continue to protect journalists while promoting integrity, accountability, and adherence to ethical standards in the practice of journalism.
He added that the Ministry of Information and Culture would deepen collaboration with media stakeholders, support capacity building, and advance initiatives aimed at countering misinformation and strengthening the credibility of journalism in the state.
Maiyaki called on all stakeholders to uphold the values of truth, responsibility, and mutual respect, describing them as essential foundations for building a peaceful, informed, and democratic society.
