Inspired by metaphysics, philosophy, and  spiritual reflection, a theme focusing on man's relationship with darkness and light attracts the brush strokes of artist, Muktar Yusuf.

This much has been captured in Yusuf's solo art exhibition titled' Hope & Light', which started showing from March 10-April 10, 2026 on Artsy.net. Organised by TAAG Gallery, the exhibition presents a body of work that explores the fragile yet enduring relationship between darkness and illumination within the human experience.

In a gallery statement and curatorial note, Curator, Rodney Asikhia noted that Yusuf constructs a world where light becomes both symbol and substance. The artist's sources of theme and inspiration, according to Asikhia, draws "from metaphysical philosophy, spiritual reflection, and visual influences ranging from comic-book imagery to impressionistic painting traditions."

Yusuf's palette, according to the curator emits recurring elements—radiant halos, burning flames, and the enigmatic blue rose—emerge as visual metaphors for transformation, resilience, and divine presence. In the artist's human representational rendition, the "figures appear suspended between suffering and transcendence, often enveloped in luminous fields of color that suggest both spiritual awakening and the quiet struggle of becoming." Beyond mere portraits, Yusuf makes his subjects as vessels of contemplation, representing humanity's constant search for meaning, hope, and renewal.

"Yusuf's use of vibrant chromatic contrasts—fiery reds, glowing golds, and deep blues—creates an atmosphere that oscillates between intensity and serenity," Asikhia stated. "The figures seem to exist in a space where the physical and the spiritual intersect, reminding viewers that adversity often becomes the crucible through which inner light is revealed."

Excerpt from TAAG: "At its core, Hope & Light reflects on the profound dualities that shape human existence: despair and faith, suffering and redemption, darkness and illumination. Through these paintings, Yusuf invites viewers into a moment of introspection—an opportunity to consider how light persists even in the most uncertain times.

Sharing the direction of his art, Yusuf quoted Martha Graham who once said: "Fire is the test of gold; adversity, of strong men." The artist noted that there is a deeper meaning to life that man has yet to fully grasp till he takes his last breath. In his Artist Statement, Yusuf looks at life's duality  beyond the known and into the unknown.

"A mysterious duality is at play in every single moment of ourselves; night and day, life and death, big and small, darkness and Light, despair and Hope. I explore those concepts in my art to echo the essence of Hope because day by day man is drifting into despair and losing the image of what he once was.

"I draw my inspirations from the Scriptures, Life experiences, music and movies and my medium of choice oil paint on canvas and an aim for growth and impact."

Presented by Tribes Art Africa, this exhibition celebrates not only Yusuf's evolving artistic voice but also the universal human longing for hope, guidance, and spiritual clarity." Yusuf's works on display for the exhibition include oil on canvas paintings Safe In the Hands of the Father, 4feet x 3feet, dated 2026; The Longing, 99cm x 110cm, 2025; The Becoming series I& II, 99cm x 110cm, 2025; Anxiety Cometh (Not), 4feet x 3feet, 2025; and One Light; One Comfort, 4feet x 3feet, 2025, among others.

Yusuf is based in Lagos, Nigeria. He has exhibited in numerous local exhibitions such as Thought Pyramid Undiscovered Abuja 2.0, The Artist Commune 10th edition, Integrity Nigeria Art4Integrity exhibition and the Benin Art Fair, among others. He has participate in a few international exhibitions and gained quite a recognition as well as magazine features such as DERASOARS Beyond The Fragments International Virtual exhibition, ABSA L' Atlelier promotionals, Lumen Gallery Contest, BOLD Journey interview and Poiema Magazine feature.

Aside being an artist, Yusuf is an illustrator with a dream, an art tutor at heart, a graduate of Zaria Art School and a fiery young blood ready to push the boundaries of life.
