Nigeria’s luxury automobile market has recorded a milestone as BBA Motors unveiled the Zeekr 9X electric SUV in Lagos, marking the model’s first appearance in Africa.

The unveiling, at the company’s showroom, also featured delivery of the first Zeekr 9X in Nigeria to music star, D’banj, signalling entry of the high-end electric car into Nigerias’s premium mobility market.

BBA Motors said the launch positions Nigeria as a strategic gateway for advanced electric vehicles in West Africa and strengthens automotive trade between Africa and Asia.

Founder, Rebecca Jia, said the opening and  debut marked a step in their expansion.

“In the Nigerian market, our core mission is to bring Chinese automotive and localised services to users. The debut and first delivery of Zeekr 9X is a key move for us to enter the new-energy vehicle segment and expand,” she said.

Jia added the company planned to provide options, from everyday commuter vehicles to luxury models, while also supporting fleet procurement, leasing and maintenance services for corporate organisations and ride-hailing platforms.

The Zeekr brand is a premium electric vehicle line under China’s Geely Holding Group, known globally for its battery technology and intelligent driving systems.

Product specialists at the launch said the Zeekr 9X had been optimised for African conditions, including Nigeria’s road terrain and high-temperature climate.

The all-electric SUV is equipped with a high-capacity lithium battery delivering up to 560 kilometres of driving range, with a combined range of about 1,250 kilometres, and ultra-fast charging that allows the battery to charge from 30 to 80 per cent in about 28 minutes.

The vehicle also features a dual-motor intelligent all-wheel-drive system producing 310 kW of power and 680 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in just over four seconds.

Engineers said the SUV was designed with reinforced chassis architecture and higher ground clearance to suit both urban roads and rough terrain common in Nigeria.

Inside, the Zeekr 9X comes with luxury interior fittings, including Nappa leather seats, panoramic digital displays and an AI-powered intelligent cockpit, alongside advanced driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist, lane centring and 360-degree panoramic imaging.

Presenting the first unit to D’banj at the ceremony, Jia said the delivery symbolised the company’s confidence in the Nigerian market, while the artiste said the vehicle’s technology and after-sales support influenced his choice.

Industry observers said the launch could signal early expansion of premium electric vehicles in Nigeria, as interest in sustainable mobility continues to grow alongside the country’s high-end automotive segment.

BBA Motors said the Lagos showroom would serve as a hub for sales, after-sales service, fleet solutions and ride-hailing partnerships as the company expands its service network nationwide and introduces more electric and hybrid vehicles into the African market.
