About 20 suspected armed thugs have attacked the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Comrade Adetunji Adene.
The attackers invaded Mr Adene’s residence shortly after he returned from an official assignment in Akure, allegedly targeting him for harm.
Eyewitnesses said the intervention of his family members and neighbours, who raised an alarm, forced the assailants to abandon the operation and flee.

One of the witnesses, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said Adene sustained severe injuries during the attack and is receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where he is said to be in critical condition as of the time of filing this report.
The state Chairman of NULGE, Comrade Fredrick Akinrinlola, condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on the union and local government system.
In a statement, Akinrinlola said the incident was not isolated but part of a growing wave of violence threatening union leaders and workers in Owo Local Government Area.
“I stand before you this Monday, May 4, 2026, to sound the alarm loud and clear. A vicious wave of violence is ravaging our union leadership in Owo Local Government Area, and we will not stand idly by. On behalf of the leadership and our entire members, we categorically condemn the barbaric attack on our Owo Branch Chairman, Comrade Adetunji Adene - an outrage that threatens the very foundation of our local government system,” he said.
