A support group of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Emerging Progressives Leaders’ Forum (EPLF), has thrown its weight behind Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule and the leadership of the party for adopting direct primaries for selecting candidates ahead of the next year’s general elections.
In a move described as a “bold and progressive step toward deepening democracy,” the Forum noted that the decision reflects a departure from the delegate system, opting instead to return power to the party’s grassroots.

In a statement signed by the National Coordinator, Johnson Preye-Aganaba, and Secretary, Alhaji Abdulkarim Ibrahim, the EPLF commended the Nasarawa leadership for prioritising inclusivity
“The decision to embrace direct primaries is a clear demonstration of commitment to transparency, fairness, and accountability. It ensures that aspirants emerge through a credible and widely accepted process, thereby reducing internal conflicts and post-primary disputes,” the statement read.

The Forum emphasised that by allowing every registered party member a vote, the state is effectively curbing the “imposition of candidates”—a challenge that has historically undermined democratic values within Nigerian political parties.
The group highlighted that this system is instrumental in building trust and confidence among the rank and file of the party.

Advancing reasons for endorsing direct primaries, the EPLF noted that the arrangement enhances participation, as power moves from a few delegates to the entire party membership.
The forum added that the mode helps to strengthen structures by encouraging local engagement and party loyalty, as well as ensuring that candidates that emerged enjoy genuine wide-reaching support of party members.
The EPLF noted that Nasarawa’s approach aligns with the national clamor for electoral reforms and sets a “commendable example” for other states and political entities to follow.
While applauding Sule’s leadership, the group maintained that the success of this initiative depends on its execution. They urged stakeholders to ensure the process remains peaceful, transparent, and well-organised.
“We call on party faithful in Nasarawa State to take full advantage of this opportunity by actively participating in the process. Your involvement is crucial to the success of this initiative,” the Forum added.
The Forum expressed optimism that this move would not only foster unity within the Nasarawa APC but also contribute significantly to the overall stability and growth of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
