The Jigawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has adopted Alhaji Mustapha Sule Lamido as its sole consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 general election.
Mustapha, son of former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, emerged at a stakeholders’ meeting held in Dutse, with party elders from the 27 local government areas in attendance.
At the meeting, a former PDP Assistant National Chairman (North-West), Aminu Abdullahi Taura, moved the motion for Lamido’s adoption, which was seconded by Aminu Wada, a former House of Representatives candidate for Dutse/Kiyawa Federal Constituency.
The state chairman of the party, Babandi Ibrahim Gumel, subsequently subjected the motion to a voice vote, with stakeholders unanimously endorsing Lamido as the party’s flagbearer.
Presenting the nomination and expression of interest forms, Gumel said the party was working to produce its candidates through consensus, in line with guidelines by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which permit parties to adopt either primaries or consensus arrangements.
In his acceptance speech, Mustapha Lamido expressed appreciation to party leaders and supporters for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to protect the interests of both the party and the people of Jigawa State if elected, noting that despite internal challenges, the PDP remains a formidable opposition platform.
“The state is facing challenges across critical sectors such as education and health. We will do everything possible to rescue Jigawa and reposition it for sustainable development,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP’s ideals of service, patriotism, and good governance, while calling for unity among members ahead of the polls.
Lamido, who contested the 2023 governorship election on the PDP platform, said he undertook wide consultations before seeking the party’s endorsement to run again in 2027.
He added that the PDP has the experience and track record required to address Nigeria’s socio-economic and security challenges if given another opportunity, appealing for the support of party members across the state.
