The organisers of the Umo Eno Easter Unity Cup, the Grassroots Sports Federation (GRASOF), have postponed the commencement of the tournament's 5th  edition from Monday, March 30 to Monday, April 6.

The new opening date was confirmed by the State Chairman of GRASOF, Comrade Ita Peters, who said the tournament will now kick off at the Uyo Township Stadium.

Peters explained that the postponement was to allow newly registered teams enough time to prepare for the competition.

The delay has not dampened enthusiasm for the tournament. A record 68 teams have registered for this year's edition — the highest number across all previous editions — following a surge in interest from grassroots clubs across Akwa Ibom State.

The championship, which features U-18 grassroots teams from the state's 31 local government areas and beyond, is seen as a platform to unearth future talents and promote youth development.

This year's edition also carries political significance, as it is expected to shore up support for Governor Umo Eno's re-election bid.
