The nation’s capital is set to host the first-ever National Masters Athletics Championship, scheduled to take place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium from May 1–3.

Organized by Nigeria Athletics Masters (NAM) in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC), the event marks a significant milestone in inclusive sports development. The championship has been formally dedicated to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s "Renewed Hope" agenda, reflecting the association's support for the administration’s sports and continuity initiatives.

NAM President, Dr. Richard Ogunleye, emphasized that the Abuja event serves as a precursor to subsequent championships slated for Edo and Lagos States in June and July. These domestic competitions are critical preparation for the World Masters Athletics (WMA) Championship in Daegu, South Korea, this August.

"This inaugural edition is a testament to our appreciation for President Tinubu’s support of the sports sector," Ogunleye stated. "It will set the standard for our upcoming events across the country."

The NAM secretariat has officially opened registration for both existing and new members across the 36 states and the FCT.

Public Relations Officer, Femi Peters, commended the executive committee's efforts, urging members to ensure the event's success.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ogunleye extended gratitude to early corporate backers and individual sponsors—including Chief Kensington Adebutu, UBA, Access Bank, and Nestle Nigeria—while calling on further private sector partners to support the three-city tour and the upcoming World Championship campaign.
