Professor Fabian Ajogwu has unveiled his latest book, The Purpose of the Corporation, at the 2026 KENNA Public Lecture held at Lagos Business School.
The event, which brought together scholars, corporate leaders, legal practitioners, and policymakers, focused on redefining the role of corporations in Africa and aligning business operations with broader societal impact.

In his presentation, Ajogwu emphasised that corporate purpose must go beyond declarations and be embedded in governance structures, strategy, and decision-making processes. He warned that without practical implementation, purpose would remain a “boardroom aspiration.”
The lecture also featured remarks from key institutional leaders. The Dean of Lagos Business School, Olayinka David-West, highlighted the importance of such forums in driving meaningful conversations and action, while the Vice Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University, Enase Okonedo, stressed that corporate governance is central to building trust in institutions and leadership.
Other speakers commended the book for its relevance. Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Emomotimi Agama, said while regulation can enforce transparency, it cannot create integrity, noting that purpose-driven organisations are better positioned for sustainable compliance.
Also speaking, Rabiu Olowo, Executive Secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, said the framework presented in the book offers investors a clearer lens to assess long-term value creation.
In a foreword to the book, Mervyn King described corporations as powerful institutions capable of driving both positive and negative outcomes, depending on their purpose and governance structures.
The Purpose of the Corporation explores the evolving expectations of corporate governance, offering insights for boards, executives, regulators and stakeholders on integrating purpose into business operations.
