A new continental network, Africa Journalists with Disabilities (AJwD), has been launched to promote inclusion, equity, and representation of journalists with disabilities across Africa’s media landscape.
The initiative, unveiled on May 1 in Lagos, aims to address the marginalisation of journalists with disabilities by creating opportunities for participation, professional growth, and visibility in newsrooms across the continent.
Speaking at the launch, AJwD Africa Lead, Yinka Olaito, said the movement seeks to redefine storytelling in Africa by ensuring journalists with disabilities are recognised as key contributors to the media industry.
“This is not just about inclusion; it is about redefining who gets to tell Africa’s stories. Journalists with disabilities are not merely subjects; they are storytellers, editors, and thought leaders,” Olaito said.
He noted that despite growing conversations around diversity, journalists with disabilities continue to face systemic, technological, and societal barriers that limit their full participation in the profession.
AJwD plans to build a cross-border network of journalists with disabilities, advocate inclusive policies in media organisations, and provide training and capacity-building programmes.
It will also promote the use of accessible tools and technologies while engaging institutions such as governments and regional bodies to advance its objectives.
The launch event brought together journalists, media executives, and inclusion advocates from different parts of Africa. Activities included panel discussions on inclusive journalism, goodwill messages from stakeholders and organisations of persons with disabilities, and the unveiling of AJwD’s programmes and partnerships.
The organisation called on journalists, media organisations, policymakers, and development partners to support efforts aimed at building a more inclusive and representative media ecosystem across Africa.
Africa Journalists with Disabilities is a pan-African professional network focused on advancing the visibility and empowerment of journalists with disabilities through advocacy, partnerships, and capacity development.
