Senate President Godswill Akpabio yesterday declared vacant the Ondo South Senatorial District’s seat vacant.

Akpabio, who made the announcement during plenary, said the development followed the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who hitherto occupied the seat, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN).

The Senate President called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a bye-election in the next 30 days to fill the existing vacancy in line with extant laws.

He directed the Clerk to the National Assembly to transmit the resolution of the Senate to the INEC for urgent action.
