A spirant for Imo East Senatorial seat in the 2027 general election, Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has outlined a comprehensive development agenda anchored on what she describes as “real impact” across communities in Owerri zone.

Speaking on her vision for the district, the former Ondo State governor’s wife emphasised a shift away from conventional political rhetoric, stressing that her ambition is driven by measurable improvements in the lives of the people.

At the core of her policy thrust is health care, with a strong commitment to reducing maternal and child mortality.

She said no woman or child should die from preventable causes, pledging to prioritise access to quality medical services and preventive care.

On education, Anyanwu-Akeredolu advocated a system where every child has access to functional schooling, while teachers are adequately supported to deliver quality learning outcomes.

According to her, education remains the foundation for long-term societal progress.

She also highlighted the empowerment of women and girls as a critical pillar of her agenda, arguing that sustainable development is closely tied to the well-being and productivity of women within families and communities.

Addressing youth development, the senatorial hopeful described young people as the “future stakeholders” of the region, underscoring the need for policies that equip them with skills, opportunities and a platform to thrive.

Infrastructure development, she said, would be approached from a functional perspective to ensure communities are livable and economically viable.

In a departure from traditional legislative practices, Anyanwu-Akeredolu proposed a governance model that strengthened collaboration between national legislators and local government authorities.

She criticised what she termed the duplication of responsibilities—such as road grading, school renovations and building of community halls—often undertaken by federal lawmakers.

Instead, she proposed a coordinated, data-driven approach where communities conduct “windshield surveys” to identify and prioritise their most pressing needs.

This, she said, would ensure interventions are targeted, efficient and aligned with grassroots realities.

“This is not about promises,” she said, adding that effective governance is rooted in sincerity of purpose and compassion rather than complexity.

She called for greater citizen engagement, urging constituents to voice their most pressing concerns as part of a collective effort to redefine representation and governance in Imo East.

Political observers note that her issue-based approach could shape early conversations ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in a region where expectations for responsive leadership remain high.
