Lagos-based Iwalewa Gallery of Art has alerted artists to a fraudulent online campaign in which imposters are posing as the gallery to solicit artworks and participation in a fake international exhibition.

The gallery said scammers have been circulating messages claiming to represent Iwalewa, inviting artists to showcase works under the guise of an “upcoming U.S. exhibition and artist choice environment series.” Some messages falsely identified the sender as an “Art Procurement Merchant at Caterpillar Inc.” as part of a supposed “Caterpillar Art Acquisition and Exhibition Program.”

Iwalewa Gallery denied any involvement in the communications and described the activity as a deliberate attempt to exploit artists and misuse its reputation. Caterpillar Inc. has also confirmed it is not associated with the campaign.

The gallery warned that it does not request money, sensitive personal information, or engagement through unofficial email addresses, messaging apps, or social media. Artists and the public were advised to verify all communications through the gallery’s official website and verified channels and to avoid sharing personal, financial, or professional information with unknown individuals.

Partner and Head of International Markets, Kemi Owo said, “Iwalewa Gallery of Art is home to one of the largest collections of African old masters in Lagos and is widely respected for promoting modern and contemporary African artists through exhibitions, workshops, and global initiatives. Currently expanding internationally, the gallery remains a leading voice for African art on the world stage.”
