British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) has been recognised by the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) and the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) for its commitment to occupational safety, employee welfare, and regulatory compliance.

The recognition, the company said, was conferred on it at the NSITF–NECA Safe Workplace Intervention Project (SWIP) Awards Ceremony and Interactive Forum on the Employees’ Compensation Act, 2010, for the South-West Zone, held in Ibadan.

The award, BATN said, was formally communicated through a joint letter issued by the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

As part of the award, the company received a comprehensive range of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) equipment intended to further strengthen safety standards across its operations. The items presented include personal protective equipment such as safety shoes, protective helmets, long-sleeve coveralls, gloves, safety spectacles, earplugs, and earmuffs.

The company also received an assortment of fire safety appliances, including carbon dioxide fire extinguishers of varying capacities, ABC dry chemical powder extinguishers, water and foam extinguishers, mobile fire extinguishing units mounted on trolleys, a dura-line fire hose, and a fire blanket.

The NSITF–NECA SWIP Awards recognise organisations that demonstrate exemplary adherence to workplace safety standards and proactive compliance with the Employees’ Compensation Act (2010), which mandates the protection of workers from occupational hazards and establishes compensation mechanisms in the event of workplace injuries.

BAT Nigeria’s recognition, the company noted, reflects its sustained investment in creating a safe, compliant, and employee-centred work environment, aligned with national regulatory requirements and global best practices in occupational safety and health.

Speaking on the recognition, the company's Operations Director, Hasnain Ishtiaq, noted, “At BATN, safety is embedded in how we operate every day. This recognition from NSITF and NECA affirms the deliberate steps we have taken to prioritise the well-being of our people and to maintain a workplace where safety standards are continuously strengthened and never compromised.”

The NSITF–NECA Safe Workplace Intervention Project is designed to encourage Nigerian employers to strengthen their OSH infrastructure and deepen awareness of statutory obligations under the Employees’ Compensation Act, thereby improving workplace safety culture across industries.
