Benue 2027: Byuan’s resignation sparks APC primary debate
The race for the 2027 Benue State governorship intensified on Tuesday following the resignation of Mathias Byuan, a development that has stirred fresh debate within the All Progressives Congress (APC)

The race for the 2027 Benue State governorship intensified on Tuesday following the resignation of Mathias Byuan, a development that has stirred fresh debate within the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the credibility of its nomination process.
Byuan, who until recently served as Executive Director, Housing Finance and Accounts at the Federal Housing Authority, stepped down in line with a Federal Government directive requiring political appointees seeking elective office to resign.
His exit is widely interpreted as a formal indication of his intention to contest the Benue governorship on the APC platform.
Observers stated that the move signals the ouset of what could be a highly competitive primary, as internal discussions deepen over the mode of candidate selection ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development came amid speculation that the party leadership may grant automatic tickets to some first-term governors seeking re-election, a prospect that has raised concerns about internal democracy.
Under APC guidelines, governorship candidates are to emerge through either consensus or direct primaries, with analysts noting that how these provisions are applied could shape outcomes in states such as Benue.
Supporters of Byuan described him as a long-standing party loyalist with strong grassroots connections, adding that his resignation demonstrates both compliance with regulations and readiness for a competitive process.

However, concerns persist within party ranks that any attempt to impose candidates or sideline aspirants could undermine confidence and trigger internal disputes.
Stakeholders noted that the Benue governorship race may serve as a test case for how the APC manages its primaries nationwide, particularly in states with multiple contenders.
As political activities gradually build toward 2027, attention remains on the party’s next steps in Benue, with analysts warning that the credibility of its internal processes could influence party cohesion and electoral prospects.
