The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has distributed food and non-food items to internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the state as part of its monthly humanitarian support programme.
The distribution exercise took place at the agency’s headquarters in Makurdi, according to Sir James Iorpuu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian and Disaster Management and Executive Secretary of SEMA.
Iorpuu expressed appreciation to the state governor for sustained financial support and commitment to the agency, noting that the backing has strengthened SEMA’s emergency response capacity and improved assistance to vulnerable groups.
He also commended the resilience of the displaced persons and acknowledged the contributions of development partners, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for their continued collaboration in supporting affected communities.
The SEMA boss said the agency is working closely with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to enhance disaster risk reduction and strengthen local communities' resilience.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to carrying out its responsibilities with integrity, transparency and accountability, while thanking stakeholders and the media for their support.
