An Abuja-based businessman, Sunday Oluwatosin Ajayi, has empowered 220 widows across Aiyekire/Gboyin area of Ekiti State with cash grants to support their small-scale businesses.

The empowerment programme, which cut across 11 wards in the constituency, saw 20 widows selected from each ward, with each beneficiary receiving N20,000 as business support.

Speaking during the presentation, Ajayi,
an alumnus of Ekiti State University and indigene of Imesi-Ekiti Ward 5, said the intervention was aimed at cushioning the harsh effects of economic hardship on vulnerable residents and complementing the welfare drive of Governor Biodun Oyebanji.

Ajayi described the initiative as the first in a series of planned empowerment programmes targeted at improving livelihoods at the grassroots.

The Director-General, Ekiti State Bureau of Local Content, Mr. Olalekan Ijidale, commended the gesture, describing it as a rare demonstration of patriotism and commitment to grassroot development.

The Chairman of Gbonyin-Aiyekire Local Government, Pastor Olatokunbo Adeyeye, praised Oluwatosin for aligning with the administration’s vision of inclusive growth and social protection.

He said the intervention complemented ongoing efforts of the state government to ensure that vulnerable groups were not left behind in development strides.

Some of the beneficiaries, including Mrs. Victoria Akinola and Mrs. Oluwalusi Ajayi, expressed appreciation for the support, saying the funds would be invested in their trades to improve their family incomes.

They urged other well-meaning individuals to emulate the gesture in order to reduce poverty and strengthen community development.
