The priest in charge of the Catholic Church of Presentation (CCP), Abule-Egba, Lagos, Very Rev. Fr. Gasper Olarenwaju, has explained the rationale behind the conferment of knighthood on devoted members, citing their longstanding contributions to the growth of the church.

He said the recognition reflects the critical role knights have played in the Catholic Church for over 500 years, noting that their service has supported its expansion and continuity.

Olarenwaju spoke during a service in which Benedict Okhumale and his wife, Theodora, were conferred with the titles of Knight and Lady Knight of St. John International.

Highlighting their importance, the cleric said the contributions of knights remain central to the church’s mission and activities, both within the religious community and the wider society.

At the event, the First Trustee, Sir Simon Ochi, represented the Grand President of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, alongside other officials of the Knights of St. John International (KSJI) and Ladies Auxiliary (LAUX). Sir Noble Robert Mgboh represented the Worthy President of Commandery 727, St. Kizito Iju, while Lady Ifeoma Ezeugwu, District 16 Respected President, represented the Lagos Grand Respected President.

Speaking after the investiture, Okhumale expressed appreciation for the honour, describing it as significant for him and his family after more than three decades of membership in the church.

He said the recognition deepens his commitment to service, faith, and spiritual growth, adding that it also sets a standard for his family.

On the responsibilities attached to the role, he referenced the “3 Ts” — Talent, Treasure and Time — describing them as central to the mission of the knights.

According to him, talent involves deploying personal skills in charitable activities, treasure relates to financial support for church projects and outreach programmes, while time requires dedication to prayer, service, and participation in church activities.

He encouraged other members of the church to embrace service, noting that it offers a sense of shared purpose and an opportunity to actively live out their faith.

Okhumale also disclosed that the Knights of St. John International and Ladies Auxiliary, in collaboration with the Archdiocesan Laity Council, are currently undertaking a Catholic Faith Family Project. The initiative includes competitions across parishes, culminating in a grand finale later in the year.

He added that prizes for the competition include a car as the top reward, followed by N1 million for second place, N700,000 for third, and N300,000 for fourth position.
