President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu yesterday paid glowing tribute to Nigerian women.

They celebrated their resilience and contributions to national development as the country joined the global community to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD).

President Tinubu used the occasion to reaffirm the Federal Government’s commitment to policies and initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for women and girls, particularly in education, economic empowerment and leadership.

In a message posted on his verified X handle, @officialABAT, he pledged that his administration would continue to create an enabling environment for Nigerian girls to remain in school and for women to thrive economically.

The President said: “Our duty as a government and as a society is to continue creating the conditions where every Nigerian girl can learn, every woman can thrive economically, and every voice can contribute to our national development.”

Tinubu noted that Nigerian women have consistently demonstrated resilience, courage and determination across different sectors, contributing significantly to the nation’s growth and stability.

“Today, on International Women’s Day, I celebrate the women of Nigeria, at home and abroad,” he wrote.

According to him, women continue to play indispensable roles in homes, farms, markets, offices and leadership positions, sustaining families, communities and the broader national economy.

“They are mothers who nurture, entrepreneurs who build, professionals who lead, and citizens who continue to shape the destiny of our country with resilience and dignity,” the President said.

Tinubu also acknowledged the historic role of Nigerian women in the country’s democratic journey and development, noting that many have broken barriers and defied limitations in pursuit of progress.

“Nigeria’s progress has always carried the imprint of women who refused to accept limits placed before them,” he said.

The President paid tribute to women who played critical roles in the struggle for democracy as well as millions of others who continue to contribute daily to sustaining families and strengthening communities across the country.

From grassroots economic activities to leadership in the public and private sectors, he said women’s contributions to nation-building remain profound and deserving of national recognition.

Tinubu further emphasised that empowering women and girls is central to Nigeria’s broader development agenda, stressing that inclusive growth requires their active participation in all sectors.

“When Nigerian women rise, Nigeria rises,” the President declared.

He therefore urged Nigerians to continue supporting initiatives that promote women’s empowerment, gender equity and greater inclusion in leadership and decision-making.

The President also honoured the sacrifices and enduring role of women in shaping Nigeria’s past and future.

“Today we honour their strength, their sacrifices, and their enduring role in the story of our country,” he said.

First Lady: empowering women investment in future

Senator Tinubu said empowering women should not be seen as an act of charity but as a strategic investment in the nation’s collective future.

Mrs Tinubu stated this in her message to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day, marked globally on March 8.

According to her, the theme of this year’s celebration, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” underscores the urgent need to ensure women and girls have equal access to opportunities that enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.

“This year’s theme reminds us that empowering women is not an act of charity; it is an investment in our collective future,” she said.

The First Lady explained that giving women access to education, healthcare, economic empowerment, leadership platforms, justice and equity would ultimately benefit the entire nation.

“When we give women access to education, healthcare, economic empowerment, leadership platforms, justice and equity, we gain stronger families, more prosperous communities and a more inclusive nation,” she added.

She stressed that the advancement of women remains essential to Nigeria’s growth and stability.

“When women rise, Nigeria rises,” Mrs Tinubu said.

She also joined millions of Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the resilience, achievements and contributions of women and girls across the country and around the world.

“Today, on International Women’s Day 2026, I join millions of Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the strength, courage, tenacity and achievements of women and girls across Nigeria and around the world,” she said.
