The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has said the implementation of the tax reforms is shaping workers and for sustainable future.
CITN President and Chairman of Council, Innocent Ohagwa spoke at a press briefing ahead of its 28th Annual Tax Conference in Abuja from May 11 to May 15, 2026.
The conference, themed “Tax Reforms and Global Relevance: Positioning Nigeria’s Tax System for a Sustainable Future,” will take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre and is expected to convene policymakers, tax administrators, private sector leaders, and development partners to assess the direction of Nigeria’s fiscal framework.
Ohagwa, said early signs from the implementation of the new tax regime indicate that many Nigerian workers are already experiencing lower deductions from their monthly salaries.
The reforms, anchored on the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and related legislations, took effect in January and represent one of the most comprehensive overhauls of the country’s tax system in decades.
He noted that feedback from salary earners suggests the adjustments are being reflected in their take-home pay, particularly for those within newly defined tax bands, while exempted individuals remain unaffected. He added that a major feature of the reforms is the harmonisation of over 60 state taxes and levies into just nine, a move aimed at reducing the burden of multiple-taxation on businesses and individuals.
According to him, nuisance levies and informal collections often associated with roadblocks are gradually being phased out, with more than 15 states already passing enabling laws to support the new framework. He also disclosed that corporate organisations are aligning their systems with the updated requirements, while tax authorities continue to intensify capacity-building efforts for effective implementation.
The CITN president expressed optimism that improved compliance and administration would boost government revenue and reduce reliance on borrowing, strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal sustainability.
Speaking ahead of the conference, Ohagwa said the event would provide a platform for robust engagement among stakeholders at national and subnational levels, focusing on the implications of ongoing tax reforms for economic growth and development.

Activities for the conference will commence on May 11 with registration, exhibitions, and a scheduled interfaith praise session at the Los Angeles Events Centre, Abuja. A hospitality night featuring networking opportunities and cultural displays, including a district parade representing CITN’s 49 district societies, is also planned.
The official opening ceremony, slated for May 12, is expected to be declared open by President Bola Tinubu. Other dignitaries expected at the event include governors such as Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Hope Uzodinma, and Babagana Zulum, alongside the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Also expected are the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, and the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Tax Policy Implementation, Joseph Tegbe.
CITN said registration for the conference is ongoing through its official portal, with participation open to both members and non-members. The institute also called for sponsorships and advert placements from corporate organisations and individuals.
The conference is expected to generate policy insights and actionable recommendations to strengthen Nigeria’s tax system and align it with global best practices, while reinforcing the gains of the ongoing reforms.
