The launch of Soft Nigeria in Asaba, Delta State, yesterday, sparked nationwide discussion about redefining youth engagement in governance, shifting from protest-based activism to structured democratic participation.

Unveiled as a national civic movement, Soft Nigeria aims to increase youth involvement in policymaking and reform efforts.

Organisers described the platform as a bridge between citizens and government, focused on simplifying public policies and encouraging informed participation rather than partisan politics.

In his keynote address, titled “Youth as Partners in Governance: Constructive Advocacy versus Destructive Agitation,” Mr. Woyemi Adeyemi, Senior Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, emphasised that youth inclusion is a demographic necessity for Nigeria.

He urged young Nigerians to transition from passive recipients of policy decisions to active contributors in governance processes.

Adeyemi drew a clear distinction between constructive advocacy—peaceful, organised, and evidence-based engagement—and destructive agitation, which he warned could erode institutions and democratic progress. According to him, sustainable reform depends on strengthening systems while pushing for change.

Referencing frameworks promoted by the United Nations and the African Union Commission, he noted that inclusive governance models consistently link youth participation to greater stability and accelerated development.

Also speaking, Dr. Oritsegbegbemi Maurice Ojoede, a prominent philanthropist and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, said Soft Nigeria was inaugurated to deepen youth participation in governance and economic development, aligning the initiative with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He described the launch as a transformative initiative aimed at reshaping the socio-political landscape for young Nigerians.

Dr. Ojoede, also the Executive Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Political Affairs, said the platform was designed to transition youths from passive observers to active architects of national progress.

“Soft Nigeria represents more than just a platform; it is a movement rooted in the values of empathy, patriotism, and collective responsibility,” he said.

“Our vision is a united, progressive Nigeria, where development is measured not only by physical infrastructure but by the strength and capacity of our human capital.”

He noted that the unveiling comes at a time when the country is intensifying its focus on youth-led innovation and economic inclusion.

According to him, Soft Nigeria aims to provide young Nigerians with the tools and mentorship necessary to thrive in a modern economy.

On her part, Ms. Kokome Okoh, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on media, said the unveiling of Soft Nigeria represents not just a movement but a mindset — a commitment to engage and build together.

She stressed that meaningful participation in the political process is impossible without education and informed engagement, noting that the youth acknowledge the efforts being made by the government.

She expressed appreciation to those who supported the movement's vision from inception, describing Soft Nigeria as a softer approach that signifies strength through impact, a thoughtful stand rather than violence, and informed participation rather than apathy.

Participants also addressed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's reform agenda, acknowledging that while current economic reforms may create short-term challenges, sustained civic engagement and informed participation are critical to achieving long-term national growth and recovery.

Overall, they asserted that Soft Nigeria positions itself as a civic education and engagement initiative designed to promote responsible advocacy, policy literacy, and collaborative nation-building.
