Vicar-General of Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Rev. John Aniagwu, has said forgiveness is the foundation for reconciliation, adding without it, genuine harmony cannot be achieved.

He spoke at 2026 Centenary Lenten Talk of Yoruba Tennis Club in Lagos. The lecture: ‘Forgiveness and Reconciliation’, drew a diverse audience.

Aniagwu said: “Forgiveness paves the way for reconciliation, and where forgiveness is absent, reconciliation is impossible.”

He said it was difficult to live in harmony with anyone to who forgiveness had been denied, regardless of familial or social ties.

He noted that forgiveness and reconciliation were central themes of Lent, saying Jesus Christ emphasised ‘’these virtues in his teachings across audiences and circumstances.’’

Club Chair, Olawunmi Gasper, described the lecture as historic in the club’s evolution.

He noted that beyond sports, the club was a platform for intellectual engagement, spiritual reflection and contributions to national development.

The event underscored the legacy of the club and its commitment to fostering dialogue to promote moral consciousness and national advancement.
