The Humanities Welfare and Social Development Initiatives (HUWESDI), in collaboration with a coalition of civil society organisations, has condemned what it described as a sustained campaign of calumny against the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday in Abuja, National Convener HUWESDI, Felix Attah, who read the text on behalf of the coalition, said the recent attacks by some members of the political elite pose a threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

“We hereby express strong concern about the recent actions of some political elite class in the campaign of calumny on the personality of the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan. We condemn this development in totality as it threatens the existence of our democracy,” Attah stated.

The civil society groups charged the INEC Chairman to remain focused and committed to delivering credible elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.

The coalition further called on Nigerians to prioritise national interest and support ongoing institutional reforms, warning against attempts to derail democratic progress through blackmail and unfounded allegations.

Attah said, “We urge Nigerians to remain steadfast in supporting institutional reforms and to resist distractions from political actors and agents of misinformation.

“We call on the Chairman of INEC to uphold the rule of law and remain focused without being distracted by political actors in delivering free, fair, and credible elections as Nigerians yearn for a transparent process come 2027.”

The coalition, which comprises multiple civil society stakeholders across the country, reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and democratic principles, while urging Nigerians not to be swayed by what it termed misinformation and politically motivated criticism.

“We want to pass a vote of confidence in the leadership of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan,” the group declared.

The organisations also commended Amupitan’s leadership style, particularly his reforms aimed at strengthening electoral integrity, institutional transparency, and public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.

“His commitment to upholding the rule of law, particularly in respecting and obeying court orders concerning sensitive matters such as the ADC crisis, reflects a deep regard for constitutionalism and democratic governance,” Attah added.
